This wonderful Bundu mask belongs to the Mende population in Sierra Leone. In the whole world there are only a few existing examples of a complete costume and this highlights the value of our piece. The Bundu mask is used by the Sande female society. The older women wear this mask during a ritual of acceptance of the young girls in their community (initiation). The Bundu mask represents fertility
