Pinacoteca at St. Paul's Outside the Walls

Aquili

Materials: Altarpiece
This
altarpiece was previously attributed to Antoniazzo Romano, a follower
of Melozzo da Forlì, who was one of the greatest Roman artists at the
end of the 1400’s. Recently, however, the attribution has gone to Antoniazzo’s
nephew, Evangelista Aquili, who painted it between 1510 and 1520.
The style of the central panel and the lateral panels differs
greatly; it will be interesting to see if the whole altarpiece was
painted by the same artist and at the same time.
The work is highly in need of restoration due to its current
state-of-conservation.
Total Cost: $25,025.00
