Handle of an oil lamp

Measurement: 16.6 cm tall, 12 cm in diameter

This type disk-shaped handle came from an oil lamp dating from the IV and V century A.D.  At the center of the embellished handle is the Constantinian monogram flanked by the apocalyptic letters of the alpha and the omega.  Along with being a finely executed piece of bronze-work, it serves as a rare documentation of the art and faith of the Roman Christian community in the first centuries after the death of Christ.

STATE OF PRESERVATION:

  • The surfaces have been altered by an unstable varnish

  • There are corrosions of the surface especially in the lower part and on the back, along with structural cracks

RESTORATION PROCESS:

  • Over-all cleaning

  • Consolidation of the object

  • Application of final protective covering

  • Construction of a proper support
