Artist:  Simone Lagi

This staircase is part of the old staircases of the Pontifical Palace that were modified and enlarged at various times during the course of centuries.  The staircase that today is known as the Staircase of Urban VIII was built much earlier.  For example, already in 1513 it was used to carry the body of Pope Julius II from his apartment to the Basilica of St. Peter’s for his funeral.  The staircase connects the papal apartments to the second and third floor of the Apostolic Palace.

Simone Lagi was an artist of the Cortonese School who also worked at Castel Gandolfo in the Chapel of Urban VIII that was restored a few years ago.
