Female Statuette from the Tomb of Manilii

Inv.:  2952
Date: Flavian Age
Dimensions:
  117 cm high
Materials: Marble

This statue was found in the Tomb of the Manilii, near the Vigna Moroni on the via Appia Antica.  It was acquired by the Museums in 1816-17. It represents a Roman woman of the Manilii family, datable to the Flavian age because of her hair-style which is typical of that time.  She is seen in the typical sculptural style used to portray the goddess, Venus.  This was a rather common Roman practice which did not intend to “deify” the dead woman but rather wanted to praise the gifts of the deceased, her beauty and purity, which were particular traits of Venus.
