This
statue is a depiction of Guanyin, goddess of maternity and life.
On her head there is a lotus flower, while in her left hand there
is a small statue of Buddha seated in abhayamudra, the position
that shows the absence of fear. The
statue was acquired by Fr. Schmidt, Director of the Ethnological Museums
of the Vatican Museums, directly in China with the authorization of Pope
Pius IX in 1935. It seems
to come from the mid-1700’s. The
Dalai Lama, upon visiting the Vatican
Museums, praised the statue commenting on its value and
high-quality of manufacture.
