Marble

These five fragmentary Neo-Assyrian reliefs have been identified as being part of two different carved slabs in the South-West Palace of Sennacherib at Niniveh.  We have the complete drawing of the slabs thanks to the careful drawing made on site by Sir Austen Henry Layard when he first discovered them.  However, the best-preserved sculptures taken from Palace of Sennacherib were lost in the river Tigris during a Bedouin attack on the boat transporting the statues.

STATE OF PRESERVATION:

  •   All the relief fragments were seriously damaged in the lower part by A Devastating fire which destroyed the South-West Palace of Niniveh in 612 B.C.  An over-all cleaning and consolidation is necessary.

RESTORATION PROCESS:

  • Proper placement of the fragments according to Sir Layard’s original drawing

  • Construction of two panels where the entire drawing will be mounted.  The fragments will be placed on top of their corresponding locations in the drawing.

  •  Graphic documentation

  • Photographic documentation

  • Re-integration of the statue

  • Re-doing of the stuccoing
