This monumental piece is actually
a preparatory drawing which was done by Matisse between
1947 and 1950, during the execution of the Chappelle
du Rosaire at Saint Paul de Vence. Designed and decorated
by the great French master, the chapel is one of the
best examples of twentieth-century sacred art; combining
spirituality and liturgy with artistic expression.
This drawing, which depicts the Madonna
and Child surrounded by flowers, was made in preparation
for a ceramic panel to be placed near the chapel’s
apse. Certain elements of the drawing were later changed
in executing the final work. This piece will be located
in the new Matisse Room (see
current restorations). |
