A remarkable exhibition
of angels from the Vatican's extensive collections
made a six-city tour beginning in February of 1998.
The Invisible Made Visible: Angels from the Vatican
examined the representations of angels in art from
antiquity through to the modern age. Over 100 rare
and sacred objects were included dating from the 9th
century B.C. to the 20th century A.D.—paintings
in oil, tempera and fresco; sculpture in marble, bronze,
wood and terracotta; gold, silver, jewelled liturgical
vessels and vestments; and tapestries.
The exhibition, containing numerous works never before
seen outside the walls of Vatican City, premiered
in Los Angeles, California (the City of the Angels)
and subsequently travelled to St. Louis, Detroit,
Baltimore, West Palm Beach and Toronto. The exhibition
and tour were made possible by a generous grant from
Chrysler Corporation.
The 240-page volume contains entries and full-page
color plates for all works in the exhibition, as well
as a map of the Vatican indicating the locations of
the collections. It also includes a history of the
Vatican Collections by Father Allen Duston, O.P.,
and essays by Dr. Nesselrath, Curator of Medieval,
Byzantine and Modern Art, Vatican Museums; Dr. Liverani,
Curator of Classical Antiquities, Vatican Museums;
Dr. Maurizio Sannibale, Curator for the Etruscan Museums,
Vatican Museums; as well as by Father Basil Cole and
Father Robert Christian. The catalogue is published
by Art Services International.
