Paper

The Vatican Museums conserve many collections of works on paper from 16th century to today, and from diverse geographical and cultural areas: from the Japanese 'Kakemono' to Henri Matisse's works on 'papier decoupé.' The main activities of the laboratory are: maintenance, conservation, and restoration of drawings, prints, plans and sketches (often life-size), and even early 19th century facsimiles of the painting in Etruscan tombs and catacombs.

The Scientific Research Laboratory carries out the preliminary studies on the supports and pigments found in these works on paper, which proves invaluable to the restoration process. The Paper Restoration Laboratory is the most recent example of specialization within the technical and scientific structures of the Vatican. This laboratory which for many years was only temporary, has now been given regular status as a fully functioning laboratory along with the other structures that have traditionally been part of the Vatican Museums Restoration Labs.
