| The
Beata Michelina: This oil painting, executed by
Federico Fiori (known as Barocci, Urbino 1528/35
– 1612), is a depiction of Michelina Metalli
who, after begin widowed at age 20, joined the Franciscan
order, dedicative her life to caring for the sick
and the poor until her death in 1356. She was then
later beatified. The restoration entailed photographic
documentation, infrared studies of the under paintings,
cleaning of the painting surface, fixation of the
colors to the canvas and the application of a final
protective varnish.
This was a severely damaged altarpiece that was
detached from it original location at the Basilica
of Saint Mary Major and has been restored in the
Vatican Labs.
Restorers working from the scaffolding on the restoration
of the 15th century frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.
A fresco was detached from an old church in Rome,
was remounted in a new light-weight frame so that
is could be transported with greater ease. This
was especially significant for the work since it
travelled to Texas for an exhibition.
